October 17 - Collingwood Aths

I jogged down from work to the Collingwood Masters Aths to check out whether it is for me or not. First thing I noticed was that they are a genuinely friendly bunch of people, really went out of their way to make me feel welcome.

The night consisted of a 50m sprint, 4x200m relay and a 8/12/16 lap race. I signed up for all three with no real expectations.

The 50m was first, and this did not get under way until 7:30pm, which was a bit of a sign of things to come, as the night was scheduled to start at 7pm. I ran okay in that although I'm definitely not a sprinter. I didn't get my time for that, but came about third.

Next was the 4x200m relay, which was after about a 20min wait, as the teams were worked out. I found this hard, as I struggled to keep warmed up, even though it was a warm night. I'd hate to think how bad the delays would be on a cold night. Our team ran pretty well and came second. I ran the third leg and made up a fair bit of ground on the two teams in front, although got overtaken by a fellow who was absolutely flying.

Everyone moved back towards the clubrooms after this and I sensed another long break, so as I'd only signed up for the 8 lap and it was 3.5km run home I opted to pull out of the final event and jog home instead.

I was pretty disappointed about all the waiting around only for 2 events, it might have been a bad night and I'd like to hear others thoughts regarding this from other venues. But to me it seemed like a lot of wasted time. I'll probably go back next week to see if it improves, but it has got a bit of work to do for me to regularly attend.

It's a good night for a social chat and a few races with friends, but I'm looking for something more for speed and tempo work.
