April 19 - Hills

Today I attended my first training session for the 'Run To The G' group. There were a couple of familiar faces from the 'R4TK' sessions, and Stu Mac, Sal and Tim were there as leaders/gurus.

Anyway I decided to join the speedwork group, something that I will hopefully do every Wednesday. There were 6 of us in the group, a good number as I found out later, as there were no opportunities to hide or not work hard.

We began from the Atrium at Fed Square and jogged down alongside the river to Anderson Street, about 2kms. We then commenced with an 'easy' run up to the top of Anderson Street and a recovery jog back down. Then we ran half way up and jogged back down, then we ran three quarters the way up and back down, and then ran half way up and then sprinted to three quarters the way up and back down.

This was followed by four sprints to one third of the way up the hill and no recovery in between, then another run to the top of the hill and jog back to three quarters the way up. We then did the last quarter of the hill backwards, jogged back and did it backwards again. I really felt this in my quads at this stage and was blowing pretty hard.

The group then jogged back to Federation Square with one last hill sprint on the Exhibition Street extension. I probably would have only completed one or two hils by myself and done a lap of the tan before heading home, but in the group I had to work really hard and felt great afterwards.

I will be at these sessions most weeks, and can highly recommend them!
