July 25 - A long run cut short.
Tonight was planned as my long slow run, however things didn't turn out quite as planned.I hydrated well throughout the day, as I had felt a little thirsty early after a hard session on Monday night, and was as well prepared as I could be for the run.
So I planned to do 25km at 6 minute pace, and set off through Ivanhoe to meet the Yarra. I followed the trail behind the Ivanhoe Golf Course to Burke Road where I crossed the river and then ran on the trail between the river and the Eastern Freeway. I was making good time, although was feeling my calves a little and never quite getting into a comfortable rhythm.
Once I had gone under the Chandler Highway, the concrete path became a little dirt track, and things became a little tricky with the mud, puddles and undulations in the fading light. I am pretty good in having very sturdy joints, so rolling ankles etc. is never really an issue, so I pressed on. I followed this trail alongside the Yarra until it crossed under the Eastern Freeway, by which time I was really struggling to see where I was going, so I went up a steep embankment and joined the footpath alongside Yarra Boulevard.
I was still unable to find a comfortable rhythm and wasn't feeling crash hot, but nothing too bad, so I continued along Yarra Boulevard. I followed this all the way past Studley Park Boathouse and behind CUB until I hit Walmer Street, then a quick downhill and over the Yarra once more. By this stage I was feeling not right, I couldn't put my finger on it, however things weren't conducive to good running, so I deceided to pull the pin right there.
In all I covered 17km in just under 100 minutes, so my pacing was pretty spot on, but unfortunately my body just wasn't in it. I realised I had a pretty solid workout on Monday, so the recovery might not have been complete, so no real drama. I'll just ensure I space my harder efforts better next time.
